Ann Arbor's Peony Garden Is In Full Bloom With Two-Thirds Of The Flowers Showing Their Colors

Lisa Barry

Ann Arbor’s world-renowned Peony garden has peaked for the season but there is still plenty of color and flowers to be seen at the University of Michigan garden.

89.1 WEMU’S Lisa Barry has the update…

Peak Peony season was a bit behind schedule this year, due to cooler weather in May, but two-thirds of the heirloom peonies in the Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor are now in full bloom!

Adrienne O’Brien is a horticulturalist in the arboretum and for the U of M botanical gardens, who oversees the Peony garden. She suggests the best time of day for enjoying them in person.

“I think the best time to come is either real early in the morning, or later, like after supper, because the light is better.  Also, in the evenings, there’s more free parking,” says O’Brien.

She says great care is taken to maintain the peony garden believed to be the largest such garden in North America of heirloom peonies developed prior to 1950.
