Civic Matters: Ann Arbor Parking Fees, 'People-Friendly Streets' Initiative, And More
In this week's "Civic Matters," WEMU's Patrick Campion talks to Mary Morgan from the CivCity Initiative about the latest political developments in Washtenaw County. Among the topics discussed are the AAATA's new "People-Friendly Streets" initiative, raising parking fines in Ann Arbor, and an open house hosted by Ann Arbor's police and fire departments.
Mary Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the airwaves. While heading up the CivCity Initiative now, Mary was previously co-founder and publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle. Prior to that, she served as a reporter and editor for the Ann Arbor News when it was a daily, print-edition newspaper.

• Ann Arbor City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. Lots on the agenda, including a proposal to raise parking fines from $20 to $35. The rationale? “To ensure it’s not less expensive for someone to accept a ticket rather than park legally in a parking structure.” Check out the full agenda here.
• This week, you have four opportunities to give feedback on the People-Friendly Streets initiative of the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. A series of forums and "open design studio" events seek input on projects along First and Ashley, the Huron Street corridor, and a William Street bikeway. • Help design tools to educate residents about Ann Arbor's 1,4 dioxane plume at a "community charrette" on Saturday, June 9 starting at 1:45 p.m. at the University of Michigan Rackham Building (4th floor), 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor. The event is part of the Michigan Sustainability Cases at the UM School for Environment and Sustainability. Click here to register.
• Ever wonder where fires occur, what type of fires are happening and how long it takes for the firefighters to respond? The Ann Arbor Fire Department has a new online tool that shows you this info and more – click here to check it out! The fire and police departments are also hosting an open house on Saturday, June 9 from 11 a.m. til 2 p.m. You can climb on a fire truck, meet the K-9 crew, and learn how the police and firefighters operate – also, free hot dogs! The event takes place on North Fifth Avenue between Huron and Ann.
• Washtenaw County is seeking applications for openings on two advisory groups – the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and Community Action Board – as well as the Washtenaw County Road Commission board. The deadline to apply is June 22 – click here for details.
• The Road Commission board is responsible for hiring a new managing director following the retirement of Roy Townsend, who has worked for the WCRC since 1987. The Road Commission board's next meeting is Tuesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. at the WCRC headquarters, 555 N. Zeeb Rd.
