With classes getting underway, the superintendent of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Scott Menzel, talks with WEMU's Lisa Barry about what they will be focusing on as the new academic year begins.
This academic year, Menzel plans to focus more on literacy. The state of Michigan recently enacted its so-called "Read by Grade Three" literacy law, but Menzel isn't so much concerned about compliance with the law, but more about providing adequate resources that ensures students are reading at their proper grade level.
The district is also reviewing safety procedures with local law enforcement and working to expand internet access for students.
