Eastern Michigan University held an ice cream social to welcome its 23rd president,James Smith.

Over one hundred students, faculty, staff, and EMU supporters attended the event on campus.  President James Smith says his focus during the beginning months will be to look at areas that unite the university community to serve students as much as possible.  He also plans to place an emphasis on the arts.

"Theater arts, watching 2D and 3D work come together is a fascinating part of college life. Brings people in from outside of campus and brings the internal community together to focus on something that can be fun, interesting and exciting."

Among those who attended the event was student body president TanasiaMorton, who would like to see the new president focus on many things, especially one.

"EMU is very true to our diversity and just making sure EMU sticks with that true diversity that we have."

The STEM field will be another point of interest for the new president.
