Some faculty members at Eastern Michigan University are upset with the administration's decision to layoff ten employees and eliminate 40 other vacant campus jobs.

Among those faculty members is accounting professor HowardBunsis.  Bunsis also serves as treasurer of the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors.  That’s the union representing faculty on campus.  Bunsis took issue with some of the figures released by EMU Administration in its announcement to of the staff cuts.  Administration said 90% of its costs are related to personnel.  Bunsis believes that number is closer to 64%.

"Visually, federal data says that Eastern Michigan makes about two-thirds of total expenses--a little less than two-thirds of total expenses for personnel. It's not 90%. That number is completely and erroneously made up."

Bunsis says the university is spending too much money on an unsuccessful football program--money that could be dedicated to further educating students.
