Lisa Barry

In this edition of Art and Soul, 89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry is joined by Omari Rush, executive director of CultureSource and chair of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.  Local artist John Gutoskey joins the conversation to talk about his upcoming show, "Pulse Nightclub 49 Elegies."

“49 Elegies” is a series made to commemorate – with a monoprint – each of the 49 people massacred at the LQBTQ PULSE nightclub in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016.

It will be showing at 22 North in Ypsilanti on June 1st during Pride Fest.  Gutoskey said this exhibition helped the artist express his emotional reaction to the shooting.

Another local artist, Leslie Sobel, is highlighted.  She has a new mixed media photography show also at 22 North Gallery in Ypsilanti.  The work is the result of spending eight days on a glacier in the St. Elias Mountains and involves her personal passion about climate change.

The opening reception takes place on Friday, May 4 from 7-10 p.m.  The artist will be at the gallery on Saturday, May 12 from 3-5 p.m. and will talk on Saturday, May 19 at 3 p.m.

Omari also speaks highly about artist Ellen Wilt, who is having a local showing, and the Ann Arbor Westside Art Hop, which takes place Saturday, May 19th.
