The cause of a fire on Eastern Michigan University’s campus early Tuesday morning remains under investigation.
The fire started before 1:30 this morning in Phelps Hall, damaging a lounge area and forcing more than 250 students to evacuate.
Mika Campbell was among them. She was sleeping in her dorm room when the fire started.
“Originally, we weren't really going to come outside because we thought it was another drill or somebody playing with the fire alarm, but, when we went outside, we saw the fire trucks and everything that was happening,” says Campbell.
EMU officials say 47 students living on the building’s first floor will be temporarily housed in other dormitories on campus while they assess the damage.
