A fire early this morning forced evacuation of a residence hall on the Eastern Michigan University campus. According to EMU Vice President of Communications Walter Kraft, the incident was first reported in a first floor lounge of Phelps Hall shortly before 1:20 this morning.

The Ypsilanti Fire Department says, when it arrived, it found no flames but a lot of smoke. One student is being treated for smoke inhalation.  The 250, or so,  student residents of Phelps Hall were initially relocated to other dorms until such time the smoke cleared. Most students have now been allowed to return to their rooms. The exception is those who live on the 1st floor of Phelps Hall. That floor is being kept clear while the Ypsilanti Fire Department and EMU police continue the investigation into the cause of the fire and assess damage.
