The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Chamber is opposed to expansion of Michigan's special district for struggling schools.

The A2Y Chamber today issued a statement opposing expansion of the Education Achievement Authority.

The EAA is currently running 15 schools in Detroit, but lawmakers are proposing an expansion to allow the EAA to control up to 50 troubled schools.

Chamber Vice President of Government Relations Andy LaBarre says given the lack of a proven track record, and the fact that the state recently terminated its contract with the EAA to exclusively manage under-performing schools, "it is premature to allow the EAA statutory authority to expand further."

LaBarre says the Chamber applauds the legislature's desire to help turn struggling schools around, "but urges the legislature to consider a range of alternatives for reaching this goal."
