Thanks For Bringing Us Luck!

Since the pandemic began, WEMU has been unable to produce traditional on-air fundraisers; usually 7 to 8 days that included dozens of guests from the community and hundreds of volunteers.

Instead, we have relied on a series of 'pop ups,' short one or two day fundraisers centered around special days or events that feature recorded messages from the WEMU team and carefully managed and appropriately distanced live pitch breaks.

Dubbed 'The Raising of the Green,' WEMU set out to raise $17,000 in 13 hours on St. Patrick's Day, aided by a special incentive from the Produce Station in Ann Arbor, and a $4000 match from one of WEMU's community champion major donors.

Thanks to the $6,000 raised ahead of the 17th, and an overwhelming response to the match, we met the $17,000 goal before noon and, not wanting to lose the momentum generated by that response, doubled the goal to $34,000.  Assisted by some spontaneous challenge matches and a focused, motivated WEMU team, the fundraiser ended with a total of $39,010; more than $22,000 over the original goal of $17,000.  Some donor comments are below:

During Covid WEMU was a life saver: deepest thanks.

Thank you to WEMU for exceptional local news and inspired local music hosts for helping us get through the dark days of the past year!

Thanks for keeping the news, blues, jazz, and roots flowing through our community veins -we need it now more than ever

Thanks WEMU for being a rock for the community during the pandemic.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given to WEMU so far this year as we continue to navigate the challenges of the pandemic.  #bestlistenersanywhere.

WEMU's next pop-up fundraiser will celebrate Public Radio Music Day Friday, April 16.  You can also give anytime to WEMU at wemu.org

Mary Motherwell, known as Molly, joined the WEMU staff in November of 1991 as Marketing and Development Director after stints in public relations at Domino’s Pizza International, and as an account executive first at the old Ypsilanti Press and then the former WIQB-FM. In December 2010, upon his retirement, she succeeded Arthur Timko as General Manager, only the third GM in WEMU’s 57 year history.
