Each January, musicians from around the world gather in New York to kick off a new year with one amazing night of live music. It's called globalFEST, and this year — the festival's eighth in New York — 13 bands performed 13 different concerts at Webster Hall, with a mix of exotic, beat-driven sounds from India, Peru, Haiti, Hawaii and many other distant locales.
In this edition of All Songs Considered, Afropop.org senior editor Banning Eyre and WFMU Transpacific Sound Paradise's Rob Weisberg join host Bob Boilen to look back at the amazing world of sound they encountered at this year's globalFEST. Hear music from India's theatrical beat-droppers in Rhythm of Rajasthan, Aurelio Martinez, New York City's Red Baraat and more.
