Klezmephonic: From Dubrovnik to Detroit

Klezmephonic: From Dubrovnik to Detroit

Klezmephonic takes audiences on a journey through the rich musical landscapes of Eastern Europe, blending Klezmer, Balkan, and Roma traditions. Ann Arbor’s premier klezmer band brings this repertoire to life with spirited freylakhs, soulful khosidls, and evocative Yiddish melodies. Featuring the talents of violinist Henrik Karapetyan, clarinetist Eric Schweizer, vocalist/accordionist Jennifer Goltz, bassist Dave Sharp, and percussionist Mike List, the ensemble showcases both virtuosity and deep cultural insight. Between tunes, Klezmephonic shares captivating stories that illuminate the fascinating history and evolution of Klezmer music.

Since 2014, Klezmephonic has brought to life repertoire ranging from traditional frolicking freylahks, wailing clarinet khosidls, sobbing violin shers, and yearning Yiddish melodies to the exciting favorites of Klezmer’s resurgence. The astounding skills and talents of violinist Henrik Karapetyan, clarinettist Eric Schweizer, vocalist/accordionist Jennifer Goltz, bassist Dave Sharp, and percussionist Mike List combine to make Klezmephonic the Midwest’s premier Klezmer band. All five permanent members are academically trained musicians who also perform in a multitude of genres, including classical, Jazz, Balkan, Irish, Near Eastern, world music, avant-garde, and improvisational styles. Between tunes in concert halls, civic spaces, festivals, and at weddings and parties, Klezmephonic is ready with a well-researched story that illuminates Klezmer’s fascinating roots.
