Braver Angels Reflects on the Future of the American Presidency
The American presidency has grown more powerful, more visible, and more contested than at any point in history. Presidents are expected to act decisively in moments of crisis, govern effectively amid congressional gridlock, and serve as both political leaders and unifying figures in a deeply polarized nation.
At the same time, concerns are growing across the political spectrum. How much power should one person hold? What safeguards are necessary to protect liberty and accountability? When emergencies never seem to end, how should democratic oversight function? And can the presidency still unite the country—or does it risk intensifying our divisions?
The Braver Angels Alliance of Washtenaw County invites community members of all political views to a meaningful conversation about the future of the Office of the Presidency. This is not a debate about specific presidents or political parties. Rather, we will have a forward-looking exploration of the office itself. Participants will engage in structured, small-group dialogues to examine today’s debates about the nature of the office and how it might evolve. Join us on Tuesday, February 24th, 2026, from 6-8pm, at Sam Hill Restaurant.
“This event is designed for anyone who cares about our system of government and the stability of our institutions, regardless of their political leanings,” says Ed Karls, event coordinator. “We aren't looking for experts; we’re looking for people willing to listen, reflect, and engage in good faith.”
