Report: Number Of People In Michigan’s Workforce Down

WIkipedia Media Commons

Michigan’s unemployment rate is down, but a new report says those numbers don’t paint the whole picture.

Michigan’s unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been since August of 2000.  But a report from the Michigan League for Public Policy says the lower unemployment rate could be -in a part -  a result of over 300,000 fewer people in the workforce.  The report also shows a large drop in younger workers.

Peter Ruark is with the League.  He says the drop in young workers means fewer people are getting the work experience they need to succeed.

“If they are delaying joining the workforce, that just kind of slows down their career path.”

Ruark says if a person enters the workforce later in life, it can result in lower pay.
