Governor Gretchen Whitmer has asked the Legislature to extend her authority to deal with the coronavirus crisis. We have more from Rick Pluta.
Governor Whitmer has ordered many businesses closed and employees deemed non-essential to stay home. But those executive orders expire soon, and the Democratic governor wants approval from the Legislature’s Republican leaders to extend them.
The House and the Senate are scheduled to return to the state Capitol next Tuesday, April 7th. The House and the Senate are expected to agree to an extension, although Republicans say they may not agree to the full 70 days requested by Whitmer.
President Donald Trump has already agreed to the governor’s request for a federal disaster declaration to help deal with the crisis that’s already claimed more than 300 lives in Michigan.
