The April 22nd birthday of two legendary bassists: Charles Mingus and Paul Chambers is another reason that Congressman John Conyers submitted the legislation designating April as Jazz Appreciation Month in 2001.
Our89.1 Jazz playlistthis morning included recordings with Charles Mingus at the helm of his band and Paul Chambers with Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and more. With these two gentlemen of jazz, it seemed only fitting to feature a female bassist as well: Kristin Korb. In addition to her steadfast walking bass lines, Ms. Korb is a gifted and expressive vocalist. Another noteworthy bassist this morning was Detroiter Robert Hurst who will lead the band on May third for WEMU’s final spring Sesi Motors 501 Jazz Show at Rush Street.
