Aguankó at Kerrytown Concert House"

Aguankó, the internationally recognized Afro-Cuban jazz group led by Alberto Nacif will share lively Latin melodies at WEMU’s next free Sesi Motors 5:01 Jazz Show, Friday April 10th.  We will return to Rush Street, and get the music going at 5:01 PM sharp.

We invited Aguankó to commemorate Alberto’s long association with WEMU as the former host of Cuban FantasyCuban Fantasy is one of the unique programs that sets WEMU apart from mainstream radio and deserves special recognition in our 50th Anniversary Celebration year.

Alberto left Cuban Fantasy to pursue his own muse, first with Paul Vornhagen and Tumbao Bravo and then with Aguankó.  In 2013, Alberto released Aguanko’s first CD on PKO Records, ElementalElemental received enthusiastic national response including four months of airplay on national radio charts and glowing reviews in Jazziz Magazine, The Latino Music Café, Solar Latin Club and the influential Chip Boaz Latin Jazz Blog.   The national writers and radio hosts sensed the authentic nature of Alberto Nacif’s compositions which reflected his love and admiration of Afro-Cuban jazz masters such as Chano Pozo, Armando Peraza and Changuito.  How lucky we are to have this band living and working in Southeastern Michigan!

Elemental was a superb example of musical cooperation.   Conguero Alberto Nacif conceived the initial melodies while percussionist Pepe Espinoza augmented the rhythms and bassist Patrick Prouty transcribed the music for the horn players.  Alberto continues to work in this fashion and plans to release a new CD – Invisible – in late April or early May.  The 5:01 Jazz show on April 10th is a chance to hear a sneak preview of the new music!  The outstanding lineup which will include Alberto Nacif – congas and percussion, Javier Barrios – timbales and percussion, Rick Roe – piano, Russ Miller – saxophones and flutes, and Patrick Prouty – bass.

5:01 Jazz is WEMU’s free music series presented generally on the first Friday of the month at Rush Street, 314 South Main Street in Ann Arbor.  5:01 Jazz is presented with support from Sesi Motors and honors Dr. Jan Winkelman, WEMU’s first major donor and long-time jazz lover.
