The Capitol Steps “Politics Takes A Holiday” New Year’s Eve Special 7PM to 8PM
WEMU presents our annual holiday tradition – The Capitol Steps “Politics Takes A Holiday” New Year’s Eve Special. It’s the year in review through the wacky musical lens of “The Capitol Steps”. No one in politics is safe…but it is all in good, big fun. The laughs start at 7 on 89.1, WEMU.
Toast Of The Nation New Year’s Eve Special 8PM to 5AM
WEMU once again joins NPR for the live coast-to-coast broadcast “Toast Of The Nation”. Jazz greats ring in the New Year from the east to west coast. WBGO’s Rhonda Hamilton is your host for this musical excursion which starts at 8PM in Boston featuring music from guitarist Julian Lage. At 9PM there will be highlights from The Newport Jazz Festival including Detroiter, violinist Regina Carter. At 10 it’s a tribute to Dr. Billy Taylor featuring five pianists from The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Then, at 11 we end up America’s jazz headquarters – Jazz At Lincoln Center for Wynton Marsalis live from Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. From 12:30 to 1:30 in the morning, re-live the incredible performance of Angelique Kidjo, Lizz Wright and Dianne Reeves with “Sing The Truth” recorded at the 2011 Detroit Jazz Festival. At 1:30, you can swing with pianist Junior Mance from Denver and at 2AM pianist Billy Childs takes over live from Los Angeles. The show ends with a reprise of Julian Lage and highlights from the Newport Jazz Festival. What a great way to bring in 2012 with live music from NPR!
