Washtenaw United: Building community power & practicing democracy in Washtenaw County
A good number of systemic obstacles remain as work towards equity and opportunity in Washtenaw County continues. The Interfaith Council of Peace and Justice is making efforts to build community power and the practice of democracy by adding more diverse voices to leadership positions throughout the area. The organization's co-director, Eleanore Ablan-Owen, joined WEMU's David Fair to share the plan for progress.

Washtenaw United: Seeking equity and community through art
There is growing evidence art plays a role in how we express ourselves, and ultimately, treat one another. That's why, for the first time in 2023, art will be part of the 21-Day Equity Challenge in Washtenaw County. WEMU's David Fair talks with local artist and equity activist Yen Azzaro, about using art to better understand implicit bias and racism's adverse impacts on the community around us.

Issues of the Environment: Making the case for preserving Ypsilanti's Peninsular Paper Dam
While there has been progress in the effort to remove the historic Peninsular Paper Dam from the Huron River in Ypsilanti, there are a group of folks continuing to argue against such action. The Friends of Peninsular Park contend the cost of removal is exorbitant, and, for less money, the dam could be returned to function and produce hydroelectric power. They also argue sediment contamination could spread downriver into Ford Lake that would adversely impact wildlife habitat. Tricia Mora is a board member of the group, and she provides the group's perspective in a conversation with WEMU's David Fair.

Washtenaw United: The personal side of Memorial Day
For some, Memorial Day is a day away from work in which, maybe a little time is spent reflecting upon those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. For family, friends and fellow soldiers, it is much more. On a Memorial Day edition of "Washtenaw United," WEMU’s David Fair explored the very personal nature of honoring the fallen with a man who has lived it. Today, Derrick Miller helps Washtenaw County through his work as executive director of the Ann Arbor-based non-profit, Community Action Network. He is also a former Marine who brutally lost some of his fellow soldiers in Iraq. Yet, he recently jumped back into the war-torn fray and traveled to Ukraine to help with its refugee crisis. We pay tribute to his story on this Memorial Day.

Issues of the Environment: Working toward a safe and usable Water Street property in Ypsilanti
For years, a 38-acre parcel of land in Ypsilanti along the Huron River has sat unused because of contamination. The Water Street property needs a developer that will take on the task of cleaning up the contamination and putting the land to beneficial use for the community. Ypsilanti City Council member Steve Wilcoxen joined WEMU's David Fair with an update on where that process stands and what comes next.
