Issues of the Environment: Practicing 'permaculture' at the Cooperative at Dawn Farm
You may know Dawn Farm as a recovery center in Ann Arbor, but the property has much more going on. The Dawn Farm Cooperative is a group of individuals farming more than 60 acres of land and using the guiding principles of permaculture as its foundation. It is about agricultural integrity and regenerative sustainability. Jesse Tack is one of the founders, and he joined WEMU's David Fair to share more details on the program and where it's headed.

creative:impact - Taking a "Sculpture Walk" through Chelsea
"creative:impact" is taking a walk to Chelsea – a Sculpture Walk that is. For almost 12 years, this public art and design program featuring sculptures by area artist has charmed residents and visitors alike as they walk the streets of Chelsea. Deb Polich, your "creative impact" host, meets up with Terris Ahrens, executive director of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, to learn more and take listeners on a virtual Sculpture Walk.

The 4th of July is right around the corner, and that means fireworks season. A lot of folks like to set off their own, but there are rules and regulations to follow. Additionally, it’s been unusually dry, and fire hazards are abundant. WEMU's David Fair caught up with Ann Arbor Fire Chief, Mike Kennedy, to talk about how to have a safe fireworks season and protect the environment.

Washtenaw Clean-up Days are here! If you have bulk waste, old appliances, household hazardous waste or electronics that need to be disposed of, this is your time. Washtenaw County director of Public Works, Theo Eggermont joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss how you can participate and keep these materials out of the landfills and better protecting our environment.

Washtenaw United: 'WeLIVE' program reducing retaliatory violence in Washtenaw County
Violence is far too pervasive around the country and right here in Washtenaw County. There are efforts to address these matters educationally, legislatively and through the criminal justice system. There is a program in Washtenaw County that is taking its anti-violence message straight to the streets called WeLIVE, which has a particular focus on preventing retaliatory violence. And the program is proving to be one successful. WEMU's David Fair was joined by community outreach specialist Roger Roper and Derrick Jackson from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office to find out more on efforts to prevent retaliatory violence.

Issues of the Environment: Ypsilanti Township seeks remediation of environmental and health hazard
Ypsilanti Township is continuing legal action against a local, interstate materials hauling company. Last summer, a massive pile of a black, coal-like substance appeared on the property owned by OKD Transport. Since then, nearby testing has turned up toxic carcinogens. The property owner says independent testing has proven the substance to be non-hazardous. WEMU's David Fair talked with Ypsilanti Township attorney Douglas Winters about the ongoing issues and concerns.
