creative:impact - Illuminating All Hallows Day with fire and light
November 1st was declared All Hallows Day to honor Catholic saints as an antidote to a pagan festival – the origin of Halloween - where people wearing costumes would light bonfires to ward off ghosts. All Hallows Day remains an important holiday for many cultures. Chadewick Harris, inspired by the art of flow, started "Ypsilanti’s All Hallows Illumination of Frog Island" to mark the day. Chadewick joins Deb Polich on this edition of creative:impact. Join us to learn about flow and get the details about this lit Ypsilanti event.

Washtenaw United: Washtenaw My Brother's Keeper celebrates growth ahead of annual gala
When former President Barack Obama signed a declaration establishing the My Brother's Keeper Task Force, it promised a coordinated federal effort to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. Washtenaw My Brothers Keeper will hold a celebratory gala on Sunday, November 5th. In the meantime, WEMU's David Fair discussed the organization's growing scope of work with Washtenaw My Brothers Keeper project specialist, Jamall Bufford.

Washtenaw United: Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels celebrates the past and prepares for the future
In 2024, Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels will celebrate 50 years of service to the community. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate, but it comes with the understanding that there is much more work that lies ahead. Did you know the number of seniors living in poverty in Washtenaw County will double by the year 2040? In the meantime, government funding and access to caregivers continues to decline. WEMU's David Fair spoke with Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels marketing and development manager Danni Murphy about the plans for the upcoming holidays and for 2024 and beyond.

For thousands of years, people have used the arts for self-expression, healing and communication. It wasn’t until the 1940s, though, that the medical profession began to embrace art therapy. Dr. Mary Spence is a clinical psychologist who uses art and creativity for people of all ages in her practice. Issues of the Environment: Safety a key issue in growing environmentally-friendly cycling community in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County
Bicycling culture in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County is growing. As such, there is an increased chance of car versus bike crashes in the area. WEMU's David Fair talked with Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society member Craig Stephann about overcoming safety hurdles as non-motorized transportation is key to sustainability efforts.

Issues of the Environment: PFAS contamination bringing end to family farm in Brighton
The repercussions of PFAS contamination continue to grow. Not only has it impacted fishing and recreation on the Huron River, it's affecting farmers and agriculture. Jason Grostic is owner of Grostic Cattle Company in Livingston County. His operations have been shut down because his cows tested positive for PFAS. As such, he’s gone nearly two years without a source of income and is now suing the source of the contamination, Wixom-based Tribar Manufacturing. He's also pushing state lawmakers to pass polluter-pay legislation that may prevent such occurrences in the future. Grostic shared his emotional story with WEMU's David Fair.

Washtenaw United: Girls Group celebrates 20 years of empowering young women in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti
In 2003, an organization was founded with a mission of tackling the unmet needs of socially and economically vulnerable young women in Washtenaw County. Now, Girls Group is celebrating 20 years of empowering young women to achieve emotional and economic self-sufficiency by ensuring they graduate from high school and begin their college or career journeys. Sue Schooner is the founder and executive director of Girls Group and shared the organization's story with WEMU's David Fair.
