The new Superintendent of the Ann Arbor Public School District will be on the job for the start of the new academic year.
As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, the Board of Education last night approved a five-year contract for the former Colorado Springs District 11 Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
Jeanice Swift will be paid $200,000 in base salary, annually, to serve as Superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools. The School Board voted five to one last night to approve the five year contract. It also includes a bonus of $10,000 for each year, if she stays in the district for the length of the contract. School board president Deb Mexicotte says Swift will be on the job for the start of the new academic year, just as the board wanted when it started the superintendent search.
Trustee Susan Baskett cast the only vote against the contract. Baskett says her vote should not be misconstrued to be one of disapproval of Swift, but the terms of the contract itself.
Baskett wanted to include a clause for incentive pay based on student achievement, and a a stipulation for financial penalty should Swift leave the district prior to the end of the contract. Additionally, if the board takes no action after the first three years of the contract, it will automatically be extended by a year.
