Ann Arbor Public Schools officials hope to get more pre-kindergarten aged kids registered for programs in the district this weekend.  The district is holding an Open House at the Preschool and Family Center Saturday from 10 until 2.

The district hopes to increase the number of kids in the young fives program as part of plans to address next year’s budget shortfall.  Executive Director of Elementary Education Dawn Linden says the program is now available in Abbot, Bryant, and Dicken Elementary Schools in addition to Haisley, Logan, and Pittsfield.

According to Linden the open house is also a chance to learn more about and sign up for the First Step program and the tuition based pre-school program.   Linden says there are still plenty of seats available for the pre-school program at Allen Elementary, but there are only a few slots left at Thurston Elementary. The district will also accept school of choice applications at the Open House.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
