The University of Michigan's solar car team is making final plans as they look to defend their five consecutive national titles. The competition starts Saturday with a week of qualifying before the Austin to Minneapolis race gets under way.
Spokesperson Allison Hogikyan says the over 100 students on the team will get a career boost from all of the time they've committed to the project. This includes electrical and mechanical engineers working with high tech equipment and materials as well as recruitment possibilities from the team's sponsors.
Hogikyan says over the years companies have used the American Solar Challenge as a chance to test technology developed by students. This year's car can go over 100 miles per hour. It's so fast and aerodynamic that it starts to lift off the ground as it nears top speed.
