No one can be certain what direction the Ann Arbor Board of Education may take after the November Election. We do know there will be some new representation. There are 10- candidates seeking to fill four available school seats. An outgoing trustee  plans to pay close attention to the race.
Glenn Nelson been a member of the board for the past 12-years, but now plans to move on. Nelson says the new board will need an even bigger push for schools of choice students and educational offerings, like the STEAM program atNorthside Elementary school. "Growth with keeping one's overhead costs constant, that allows us to increase instructional expenditures even as the state support stagnates," Nelson says.

That's exactly what Nelson expects the proposed Annexation of the WhitmoreLake Public Schools will do for the Ann Arbor district. It would add the per-pupil funding of Whitemore Lakes roughly 1,000 students to the bottom line, increasing total student population in Ann Arbor to about 18,000.

The top fourvote-getters November 4th will each serve four-year terms on the board.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
