A community favorite was honored with the unveiling of a memorial sculpture Wednesday evening at theAnn Arbor Farmer's Market.
Friends and family members of Ann Arbor educator and communicator Coleman Jewett gathered on a warm Wednesday evening for the unveiling of two bronze Adirondack chairs created in his honor. Jewett was a regular fixture at the market for more than 40 years where he made and sold that type of chair. Those celebrating his memory at the sculpture unveiling said he "made everyone feel like they were his best friend." Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor was among those who spoke at the event.
"It is about all things. You know, public art is about creating community. It's about honoring community, and that's why one piece of public art in particular, I think, is going to be so beloved."
Coleman Jewett, who was beloved by the Ann Arbor community, is the father of 89-1 WEMU Afternoon music host Michael Jewett, who said his father appreciated well-embellished stories.
"And opinions on just about any subject, both important and, well probably actually, valued opinions on something really wasn't all that important."
The two bronze chairs created by Ann Arbor artist Tad McKillop will eventually be placed in a specially constructed stall at the Farmers' Market to protect them from the heat and other weather elements.
