Rutherford Pool In Ypsilanti Closed For The Season Due To COVID-19

WEMU

The Friends of the Rutherford Pool Board announced that, due to COVID-19, their pool season has been canceled.

The board says it would’ve been very difficult for them to enforce a six-foot social distancing guideline, especially with younger children.  Renovations for the pool’s bathhouse were also put on hold because of the pandemic, and now construction is not expected to be completed until July.  Jessica Faul is the chair of the board and says, with the construction delay, the pool season would’ve been cut in half.

Jessica Faul: We would have to incur significant start-up costs and wouldn’t have a lot of time to recoup that with pool memberships and fees from lessons and so on.

The pool usually generates $60,000 in entrance fees and $20,000 in program fees every summer.  They hope to make-up the financial loss through donations, sponsorship and grants.  The City of Ann Arbor also canceled its pool season because of COVID-19.
