Interim MSU President John Engler To Testify Before US Senate Committee

Michigan State University’s interim president will appear before a US Senate subcommittee today.

The subcommittee has held multiple meetings in response to former MSU and USA Gymnastics sports doctor Larry Nassar.  Nassar sexually assaulted hundreds of his patients and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Former Michigan governor, and current MSU interim president, John Engler said he’s excited to have an opportunity to share the progress and changes Michigan State has made.

“We’ve now put in place what I think is a rather broad safety net that looks out for young people,” he said.

According to Engler, a situation like the Nassar case, “could never happen again at Michigan State.”  He says that’s because of institutional changes made at the college like new protocols for minors that use medical services and reporting requirements for trainers.

But Engler’s time at MSU has drawn sharp criticism.  Morgan McCaul is a survivor of assault by Nassar.  She says Engler testifying at this hearing is ironic because Engler has held the school back, in part, by not listening to what students and faculty want at the school.

“They have made some changes on the campus, but I don’t know how much I credit that to John Engler himself and rather the community rallying around and the faculty who have really enacted that policy,” she said.

Representatives from the United States Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, and the Athletes Advisory Council are also expected to testify.
