The bills are part of an ongoing effort to pass gun safety laws following a fatal mass shooting at Oxford High School in November. Democratic state Senator Rosemary Bayer represents the district that includes that school. She says the bill would strengthen laws designed to prevent minors from gaining unsupervised access to a gun.
“I’m tired of thoughts and prayers. We have the privilege of being able to do actually do something about this. In our work, we could change this.”
Democrats would need Republican buy-in to get these bills through the Legislature. It’s unclear if they’ll receive it. Another gun-safety bill package will likely receive a hearing before a Senate committee.
