One week after members of the Black Student Union and other students at Eastern Michigan University walked out of class in a protest against racism on college campuses, officials are holding a forum on the issue at McKenny Hall.
Around 150 students staged the walkout to demand university officials be proactive about dealing with institutional racism on campus. In response, officials have organized a public forum for students to speak directly to faculty and administration.
Geoff Larcom is the media relations director for EMU. He says administrators want to encourage an open dialogue within the university.
Larcom says,
“[This forum is] about experiences students, staff, and faculty have had at Eastern. Aspects of what could be called institutional racism, and there could also be some positive things that could come out.”
The forum was held at noon Thursday in the McKenny Hall Ballroom.
