Ann Arbor Public Schools have asked the Michigan High School Athletic Association to delay the start of the winter high school sports season until after Thanksgiving.
The district says the health and safety of their student athletes, coaches, and staff remains a high priority during COVID-19. They’re concerned that kicking off the winter sports season next week would create a health risk as the number of COVID-19 cases in Washtenaw County and the state have increased. Andrew Cluleyis a spokesperson for the district.
Andrew Cluley: The outdoor sports where you’re outdoors, which is what most of the fall sports were or are, there is less of a concern. But as we look to move into these winter sports where we’re all inside, we have some concerns.
The district is waiting to hear back from the athletic association regarding their request to delay the season. As of now, student athletes are not required to get tested for COVID-19 for playing school sports.
