The United Way's National Day of Action is right around the corner. Local volunteers in communities around the country work on a number of projects  aimed at helping the underserved and enhancing engagement. Last year, the pandemic forced everything to be a virtual experience. This year, vaccinations and relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions will allow for the return of some in-person work, too.  WEMU's David Fair got the rundown of how the 2021 Day of Action will be conducted from United Way of Washtenaw County senior development associate Madeline Garcia.

WEMU has partnered with the United Way of Washtenaw County to explore the people, organizations, and institutions creating opportunity and equity in our area.  And, as part of this ongoing series, you’ll also hear from the people benefiting and growing from the investments being made in the areas of our community where there are gaps in available services.  It is a community voice.  It is 'Washtenaw United.'

UWWC STATEMENT:

United Way Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations around the world to LIVE UNITED and take action to address a variety of challenges. 2021 National Day of Action is on and around Friday, June 18th. Brought to you by United Way of Washtenaw County’s Volunteer Center and the Emerging Philanthropists.

Join us for our largest day of service by volunteering remotely or at nonprofits throughout Washtenaw County!

There are four ways YOU can participate:

  1. Hands-on Volunteering: There are many hands-on needs to be met throughout our community. These are projects that can still be carried out in person, with proper safety precautions observed.
  2. Virtual Skill-Based Volunteering: These are projects that can be completed anywhere, aimed at engaging volunteers with specific skills (such as finance, marketing, communications, website design, etc.). We have partnered with Catchafire.org to provide these skill-specific volunteer opportunities.
  3. Remote Volunteering: These are projects that can be completed off-site, by volunteers mostly from their homes (such as donation drive for vital supplies, remote blood drive, etc.).
  4. Advocacy: United Way of Washtenaw County has been focused on equity and racial justice for many years but we need your help to make a change.

Check back often, new projects are being posted each week!
