Washtenaw United: Marking the one-year anniversary of merger between United Way of Washtenaw County and United Way for Southeastern Michigan
On October 1st of 2023, The United Way of Washtenaw County ceased being an entity unto its own. It merged with, and was rolled into, the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. At the time, leadership said it would not only maintain staff and services in Washtenaw County but expand them. WEMU's David Fair discussed where the merger stands one year later with chapter president and CEO, Dr. Darienne Hudson.

Washtenaw United: Ann Arbor-based GrieveWell helps residents confront moments of grief
The holiday season is rapidly approaching. While most are planning their celebrations and family gatherings, there are all too many who struggle with grief through this time of year. There are strategies that can help all year long, and that’s the focus on the Ann Arbor-based non-profit, GrieveWell. WEMU's David Fair caught up with GrieveWell’s Outreach and Marketing Manager, Alice Liao, and they discussed the healthy management of grief and the journey to a place of peace.

Washtenaw United: Fresh Start Clubhouse in Ann Arbor creating opportunities for those with mental illness
Envision a world where all people living with mental illness lead healthy productive lives and have equal opportunity. That’s the vision of Fresh Start Clubhouse in Ann Arbor. The non-profit emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and empower people living with mental illness and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. WEMU's David Fair talked about the people and the process with Fresh Start Clubhouse executive director Webb Lucas and member colleague Dan Seng.

#OTGYpsi: Ypsilanti activist advocates for women’s prison to address mold and related health concerns
Reports of mold at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility are creating difficult living conditions. The Ypsilanti-based organization Survivors Speak has been working to address these problems and to have inmate Krystal Clark released because of the health issues created by the prison conditions. Washtenaw Business Lens: Impacts of the state's new marijuana tax on the Washtenaw County cannabis business
The cannabis business in Washtenaw County has been rather robust since the legalization of recreational use. Now, the state is putting an additional 24% tax to help fund road repair and construction. WEMU's David Fair and Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Chamber Executive Vice President Andy LaBarre spoke with Mike DiLaura about potential business impacts in Washtenaw County. Mike is the Chief Corporate Operations and General Counsel at House of Dank, which has stores in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

Washtenaw United: Ypsilanti-based Student Advocacy Center of Michigan offers hand up to struggling K-12 students
Suspensions in our public school system continue to be an issue. The students who are disciplined because of their behavioral issues often find it difficult to get out of the cycle and back on track. That’s where the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan makes a difference. WEMU's David Fair talked with the center's executive director, Peri Stone-Palmquist, about the work to secure an education for students in need and to light the path to a brighter future.
