Ypsilanti Firefighters Contract Approved

City of Ypsilanti

The president of Ypsilanti's fire fighters union says with last night's City Council approval of a new contract, the proposed Public Service Officer model is dead.

WEMU's Bob Eccles has the story:

Ypsilanti City Council last night approved a new contract with local members of the International Association of Fire Fighters. The President of the union says the deal ends the city's plan to train police officers to also perform fire fighting duties.

In order to get rid of the Public Service Officer, or PSO, provision, there were some trade-offs. Ken Hobbs says the contract language reduces the minimum fire fighter staffing levels, and that leaves the department unable to do its job properly.  Other concessions accepted by the fire fighters union include less overtime and reductions in leave time.  Hobbs says that since the PSO provision isn't included in the contract, the fact it is included in the city's contract with the union representing police officers is irrelevant.
