Ypsilanti Students Marching In Protest Of Unjust Suspensions

studentadvocacycenter.org

Members of the Youth Voice chapter at Ypsilanti Community High School are marching in a protest of unjust suspensions and expulsions.

A three-day march from Detroit to Lansing will end with a rally Wednesday morning at the state Capitol.

Peri Stone-Palmquist is Executive Director of the Ypsilanti-based Student Advocacy Center of Michigan, which has been working on the issue of unnecessary suspensions and expulsions for a number of years.

She recently succeeded in having the Ypsilanti Community Schools Board of Education adopt a "Solutions not Suspensions" pledge.

"I think we still have some work to do," Stone-Palmquist says, "but there's a commitment, and they're working hard I think to make that happen."

The march to Lansing started Monday, and is being done in relay fashion.  The local high schoolers were handling the segment of the march from Wixom to South Lyon Monday night.
