The Washtenaw County Commissioners will enter the minimum wage debate tonight as they consider a resolution supporting an increase.
The Chair of the Washtenaw County Commissioners says employees working for minimum wage need to work two full-time jobs to afford living in the county. The commissioners tonight will consider a resolution supporting a hike in minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. Chair Yousef Rabhi says that's really still below where it should be, based on the county's living wage ordinance. It requires companies doing business with the county to pay $11.64 an hour or $13.65 if the employer doesn't provide health care benefits.
The resolution is supporting efforts by President Barack Obama who spoke at the University of Michigan last month about the need to increase minimum wage. There are also efforts by state lawmakers and citizen's groups to boost Michigan's minimum wage.
