Digital Library Partnership Including University of Michigan Wins Court Case

HathiTrust Digital Library
HathiTrust Digital Library

The HathiTrust Digital Library has been cleared of accusations of copyright infringement by a Federal Appeals Court. The University of Michigan is part of this collaboration of over 90 libraries and universities that are compiling digital information on nearly every topic throughout history.

The ruling says full-text search of protected work is allowable.  Executive Director Mike Furlough says the collection includes items that have previously been challenging to share.  This includes millions of unpublished manuscripts, hand written documents, video, and audio collections.

According to Furlough the digital library allows people to search concepts not just words.  It also provides access for blind people and others with print disabilities.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
