Michigan Elvisfest Returns To Ypsilanti

Michigan Elvisfest
Michigan Elvisfest

It may be 35 years since his death, but Elvis fans still flock to a wide variety of events celebrating the "King." Outside of Graceland the place to be this weekend is the 15th annual Michigan Elvisfest in Ypsilanti's Riverside Park.

Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Tim Colbeck says the mix of events in Depot Town across the summer brings positive attention to the community.  He says Elvisfest in particular attracts thousands of people to enjoy the city's restaurants and shops.  Many of these visitors come from across the country as they follow award winning Elvis inspired acts.

This year's Elvisfest will include a tribute concert, impersonators, a candlelight vigil to mark Presley's death, and a classic car show.  The event starts Friday afternoon and is also a fundraiser for Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels and S-O-S Community Services.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
