Elevator Work Has Downtown Ann Arbor Library Closed

The Downtown Library is temporarily closed in Ann Arbor.  Work will keep the doors shut through at least early next week.

Crews are making progress in removing the old elevator at Ann Arbor's downtown library. It's still unclear exactly when the building will re-open.

Library Director Josie Parker says the elevator failed in May and they've known this shutdown was going to happen.  Because of this, meeting rooms haven't been made available for rent and the Ann Arbor School Board and Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority were notified that they'd probably need to meet elsewhere.

Parker says neighborhood branches typically get more use in the summer months, and she expects a big spike at one branch.  "I'm sure we'll see the numbers go up at TraverwoodBranch because all of the hold materials that would have normally been picked up downtown are being moved to Traverwood, were moved to Traverwood," Parker says.

Once the removal is complete Parker believes it will still take some time to install the new elevator. She doesn't know yet if that part of the process will require further closures.

The library board has approved spending nearly $200,000 on the project.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
