New Dock For Ypsilanti's Peninsular Park
With a new 'friends' group, the future of Ypsilanti's Peninsular Park is looking up. And there's more good stuff happening in the park.
If you've ever canoed or kayaked the Huron River in Ypsilanti you know that getting your boat out of the water to portage around Peninsular dam can be a challenge. The dock was falling apart. But on Wednesday the Huron River Watershed Council celebrates the installation of a brand new dock in Peninsular Park.
Deputy Director Elizabeth Riggs says the new dock was a RiverUp! priority project, and part of the Automotive Heritage Trail District master plan.
"Thanks to funding from Motor City National Heritage Area and some other funders we've been able to put together a vision for how highlight the automotive heritage of Ypsilanti," Riggs says, "and also encourage trail recreation on the water trail and on the Border to Border Trail."
Riggs says it was nice to partner with the city of Ypsilanti, which paid for improvements to the downstream portion of the trail.
A celebration of the new dock is planned for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Peninsular Park, off Leforge Road north of Huron River Drive.
