State Of Michigan Extends The Great Lakes Mercury Collection Program

U.S. Ecology

Free program allows residents to safely dispose of devices containing the hazardous material

Michigan is extending its Great Lakes Mercury Collection Program through the month of September. The program was responsible for removing nearly 700 pounds of mercury from the local environment last year.

Judie Napier is the Business Manager of U.S. Ecology, one of the organizations operating the program. Napier attests everything they collect is disposed of safely and securely. Napier states that the "process seperates the mercury from the other products and captures it all for recycling."

Napier says they will take all forms of mercury, with the exceptions of compact flourescent light bulbs.

Daniel came by jazz and public radio through his first love, 20 th -century American Literature, when he was nineteen, and shortly thereafter found WEMU. After listening and being an active volunteer for the station for ten years, he joined the staff in 2010 to produce the program From Memphis to Motown, advancing to handling many other production roles in the station.
