Eastern Michigan University Hosts Annual Digital Divas Workshop For Middle-And-High-School Girls

EMU

The workshop is geared to motivate girls to strive for excellence in male-dominated fields.

Eastern Michigan University hosted its annual Digital Divas conference, this past Friday. The annual event strives to encourage girls in middle school and high school to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. More than 500 area students came to EMU's campus to learn about jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics -- or STEM.

Susan Gregory co-chairs the Digital Divas event. She says they want to get girls interested in STEM careers, and show them they can be successful. Gregory stated that it is "energizing when you see all these young girls getting excited about a world of opportunity that they maybe had not considered before." Gregory went on to state girls have traditionally been discouraged, or at the very least not encouraged, to take math and science classes. Gregory went on to attest that "the focus of this workshop is to let girls know that they can be very successful and have a career in STEM-related fields."

The conference was held at EMU's Student Center, Friday, April 24 from 8 A.M. until 3 P.M.

Before joining the WEMU team in 2010, Daniel Long was a listener and active WEMU volunteer. He first came to the artform we call jazz through his first love: 20th century American Literature. It was through the depiction of a raucous Charlie Parker club date that gave Daniel a thirst to know more.
