The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the Ann Arbor group ArborWoman to help prevent infant deaths.
The plan is to offer monthly workshops to teach the public about safe sleeping methods for babies. That includes not sleeping on the same bed as your child.
Iris Proctor, executive director for ArborWoman, says four thousand children died every year in Michigan between 2010 and 2012 because of unsafe sleeping environments. In Washtenaw County, that number was between ten and twelve children.
In addition to workshops, those who sign-up will receive items such as a firm mattress, fitted crib sheets, safe sleep sack, and a layette filled with infant necessities. Anyone with an infant can register for the free program.
