Dozens of people marched across Eastern Michigan University's campus Wednesday to promote autism acceptance.
It's part of a larger national effort to raise awareness for autism during the month of April.
Sally Burton-Hoyle is an EMU professor who helped organize the march. She says they want to broaden people's horizons and get them to realize autism is not a "scary word."
"There's a real stereotype about what autism is. People have seen 'Rain Man' or they've seen a person with autism," Hoyle says.
"One of the mottos in the world of autism is, 'if you've met a person with autism, then you've met a person with autism,' because everybody is so very different."
