The Ann Arbor School District And District Library Officially Separate

The Ann Arbor School Districtand the Ann Arbor District Library are separating, but say a strong partnership will continue.  The two organizations yesterday announced the Ann Arbor schools will no longer have a financial interest in the district library.  The school board and library board have each approved a three million dollar exchange of assets that fully releases the school district from its interest in the downtown library branch.

The library had been under control of the school district for years leading up to the 1994 passage of Proposal A.  That school funding issue required districts no longer operate public libraries.  In 1995, a separation agreement was reached and, then in 1996, Ann Arbor school district voters passed a special millage to fund the Ann Arbor District Library, serving Ann Arbor and parts of seven townships.

In a joint statement, both organizations say they will "continue the many positive partnerships that promote literacy and learning throughout the Ann Arbor Community."
