New Ann Arbor City Administrator Talks About His Plans For The City

Jorge Avellan

Ann Arbor has a new city administrator, and he already has a vision for the city.

Howard Lazarushas been on the job for three weeks now.  He knows his relationship with City Councilwill be essential.

"Getting to know council has been important. I've either have gone through or have scheduled ward walks with each of them so I can see what's on their mind and also start to establish a really positive relationship."

The former director of Public Works for the City of Austin, Texasplans to address the deer cull issue.  Lazarus has already talked about it with city staff.

"Towards the end of the summer my intention is to come back to council with a framework of goals for whatever actions we take and what their likely to see and when. So as individual actions come before them for approval they know how it fits in the big picture. We're going to meet with the interested parties to try to engage them and try to get them to help us find the right solutions as well."

The city administrator has started reviewing the current city budget and doesn't expect to recommend cuts for the next one.

"I don't see any. I don't see any on the horizon. But again, that's just after three weeks, so you have to give me a chance to look at the budget a little bit more, but I think things are stable."

Lazarus also plans to look into the 1,4 Dioxane situation.
