Ann Arbor city council tonight will revisit an immigration ordinanceafter postponing a vote on the measure last month.
If approved, the ordinance would prohibit any city employee from asking a person about their immigration status.
The Ann Arbor police department already has a similar policy in place, but it is an internal directive and is not applied citywide. Chuck Warpehoski represents Ann Arbor's 5th ward. He says it's important the ordinance is clear to the community, at large.
"The goal of trying to make sure that this is a strong policy that has the full backing of Council and is well-communicated to the public at large is why I think this council action is important."
Council postponed a vote on the ordinance last month amid concerns that it might compromise the city's ability to leverage federal funds for important programs.
