The state Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday afternoon in two separates cases involving guns in schools.  One of those cases involves the Ann Arbor public school district.

89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry spoke with Ann Arbor school superintendent Dr. Jeanice Swift about the district's stance on guns in school.

Dr. Swift says allowing guns on school property runs counter to their critical mission and purpose to provide a safe and welcoming environment in school, adding "guns in school are a disruption to the school environment."  She said students and staff are not allowed to bring guns on school property, and perfect strangers should not be allowed to either.

She says there has not been a topic in her five years with the Ann Arbor school district that she has had so much feedback about, adding 99 percent of the parents and all of the students she has heard from don't want guns allowed in the classroom.  Dr. Swift said she was pleased the state Supreme Court was taking up the matter and believes there is a wide body of law that support their stance of keeping guns off school property.
