Art & Soul - The Art Of Well Being: A Balanced Approach To Planning And Life
This week, Art and Soul is about living a self-aware, well-balanced life with hope and happiness.
89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry is joined by Ann Arbor business leader and author Peter Morville. Lisa and Peter see how their starkly different work experiences can merge into one healthy perspective offering balance and hope and a sense of well-being.
Peter Morville is the president of Semantic Studios in Ann Arbor and works in the digital world as a professional planner for websites and software companies. He is also interested in applying his technical skills more broadly. That includes the recognition that we are all connected and a balanced approach is the most successful way to plan and change.
His latest book is called "Planning For Everything." It talks about the benefits of planning but also talks about the great strengths of being an improviser. Morville says sometimes going with the flow can be the best route.
He cites a book from the early 1990's called "The Psychology of Hope," where the author argues that hope equals willpower plus waypower--waypower, meaning getting at our creativity while believing there's always a different and better way to achieve our goals.
Morville believes having the discipline and fortitude to move forward, but the creativity to find different ways around obstacles is a "huge part of being a successful planner." And, he adds, "awareness is the first step in being able to change.”
