In this week's bi-weekly conversation with the League of Women Voters of the Ann Arbor Area, 89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry talks with Sue Smith, a member of the Ann Arbor area league and a board member of the League of Women Voters of Michigan.

Sue Smith spoke of the history of the league, which has been working for voting rights for nearly a hundred years.  She went over several reasons why voter turnout is typically low in Michigan, including lack of convenience and easy access to voting.

The league is currently collecting signatures as part of a "Promote the Vote"initiative to amend the Michigan Constitution to make voting more accessible, convenient, and secure.  The League is working with a number of organizations, including the ACLU of Michigan, the NAACP, and the Michigan League for Public Policy.
